This is a chainmail Antique Silver Caping / Covering Modesty
Shield from either Malaysia or Indonesia.
This unique piece
dates from the late 1800's to early 1900's. These type of covers (both mesh and hard metal) were worn by Babies / Small Children of Muslim families to cover their genitals.  The caping was suspended from a Chain that would have been worn around the child's waist.  The thick mesh on this Caping is made from double looped eyelets.  This item was purchased in the early 1970's from a local antique dealer in Penang, Malaysia that sold primarily Peranakan / Nyonya Items.   Modesty Coverings of this sort seem rare - have not seen any other examples on antique online websites.
