    Description

This is an excellent antique northern Thai (Sawankhalok or Sangkhalok) celadon glazed bowl. The bowl is quite large, being 223 mm or 8 inches across the top rim and 90 mm or 3.6 inches tall. The decoration is very restrained with simple incised and finger rings around the inside and outside of the bowl. The glaze is a beautiful olive green celadon, which retains its gloss internally and on half of the outside. The remaining glaze on the outside has denatured, lost its gloss and turned a creamy white. There are very few scratches. All in all, the appearance is very pleasing.
Construction is very solid (about 0.25 inches thick) and condition is excellent. There is only one small, tight and clean hairline extending nearly vertically from the lip. It can be seen in the last two photos.
    The
    Sukhothai Kingdom
    that produced these ceramics
was an early kingdom in the area around the city of
    Sukhothai
    , in north central
    Thailand
    , which
existed from 1238 until 1438 (ie 13th to 15th centuries). However, Wikipedia says that kiln evidence suggests that this style of pottery continued until middle 18th century. So, w
hether this is 13th, 14th, 15th or even 18th century only the experts could say!
There is an interesting old label on the base. It is typewritten and says "Sawangkhalok (Thai. 12-14C)". Beneath that, part of the label is missing, but what remains appears to say "
Bangkok '65". I presume that this bowl was collected in Bangkok in 1965 and that the collector mistook the period 1238 to 1438 to be the "12th to 14th centuries".
